An export permit and police clearance certificate is required before any motor vehicles can be exported.

An identity document, registration certificate and purchase invoice will also be among the documents which will be required. A Shipping confirmation letter may also be required by the authorities before they issue a Police Clearance Certificate which is valid for 21 days.

The department of Trade and Industry is responsible for the issuing of export permits for motor vehicles.

Before shipping a motor vehicle, there are a number of factors to consider. These include:

  1. Does the manufacturer have a presence in the country you are moving to?
  2. Will you be able to obtain part for your particular model of vehicle in the country you are moving to? Different countries may import different models, and your particular vehicle’s parts may not be available.
  3. Is the car right-hand or left-hand drive?
  4. Does your car conform to the standards and regulations of the country you are moving to?
